We recently asked the question “All You Need Is A Laptop And You Can Become A Music Producer. Is This Good Or Bad? Let’s Discuss……” on our facebook page here. The post received a lot of comments and a great discussion was created. I wanted to share this discussion with the rest of the internet as it’s a very interesting read.
- I think its great, it gives a chance for an unknown person with talent to get their music out there and possibly make a career of what they love. If only labels put more time into hunting down this talent. It seems your chances of getting recognition or even getting signed rely more on who you know, and not what you can produce, no matter what the setup. No point in having all the gear if you can’t use it efficiently.
- There is no right or wrong way when it comes to any creative endeavour.
- Music is not fof everybody, music is for talented and creative people. The thing is just, money shouldn’t play a major role in the selection.
- Music is for anyone who cares to put there hand to creating it. Talent is relative. If you do it simply for your own enjoyment you are your own critic. No talent required…
- I know of some people who doesn’t understand the rhythm, neither the melodic composition. And they don’t care at all… Music composition definitely is not for all. If you don’t feel it, so why bother?
- Only thing you need is passion and patience…

- Sure with that, anyone can become a producer. Doesn’t mean everyone has the skills and chops to become a good producer. Everyone’s free to try and chase after the dream though…
- We all start somewhere i started with just a laptop really enjoyed what I was doing so decide to invest now studio is ever growing and I’m enjoying every bit of this great hobby.

- It is a double edged sword imo.. its a good thing because it means anyone can start learning production and u do find talent from time to time.. its a bad thing because being able to have a powerful virtual studio on a computer means that every man n his dog is making music of one form or another, hence the over saturation of producers. Mind u i bet soundcloud are enjoying it lol

- Giving a paintbrush to an idiot doesn’t make him Picasso. Takes talent, not just the right tools imho…
- The only difference between having just a laptop and having midi keyboards and synths is not having to use fucking piano roll. If you can write your own synths on a vst who gives a shit what setup you have…
- You need a lot more than a laptop lol! and also, It has to be a top of the range laptop.
$1000’s of saving, lots of spare time, dedication, ability, determination, vision, knowledge, supportive friends, parents, monitors, keyboard, mouse, midi controller, bedroom (studio) - You can only reach a certain level of your potential without outboard equipment, but it does scare away the fakes.
- I can buy a lot of food…cook and call myself a chef. But am I good at it? (that’s the catch)
- Long as the bests are fire. Who cares what equipment you used. Just make good music. Its tons of producers with expensive gear.. and beats sound like trash.
- It’s obviously good,cause i think it is not a matter of the means you use but the passion you get in making music.
- I think it’s great, I started using Ableton Live 8 about a year ago and I love it, no intention of trying to make a career out of it, I just really enjoy making music.

- Course it’s great, it’s abolishes the pageantry of it all, which exists to this day, and allows for a larger variety of intelligible minds to access an industry that should have always been open for everybody in the first place. To say “all you need is a laptop” would be like saying “yeah but you just play guitar, where’s your drummer? your bass player? it’s never gonna work mate”
- Not everyone can make great tunes…
- I disagree with anyone who says you need lots of equipment, money, the most expensive tools, the right connections etc etc… Before I continue I am not attempting to get my music out there. But I have included work of mine in this post. I am not a professional producer nor have I studied music. The track I included in this post was created with my £50 midi keyboard, my £300 computer and fl studio. The only sample used was the vocals, the rest was from feeling what was right as I tapped out the beats and notes on the keyboard. All you need is passion for what you are doing.

So it’s good to have litle n make it bigger! - It’s Good u can learn all the basics of producing with just a lap top and some simple software , u can find ya feet and when u are confident and ready to go to the next level and purchase equipment … Besides when ya board making a beat always solves the issue and that’s good for free…

- I think it’s great! You can’t shortcut creativity. But production getting easier and easier allows the creative person to be more efficient. Just because it’s easier to make tunes doesn’t mean that everyone can make good sounding stuff.
- It opens the doors to undiscovered talent. It also opens the doors to more discovered shit. Gotta take the good with the bad.
- Ok with a laptop you can be a producer, but your talent(work) is what’s going to say if you’re good or not..
- You need commitment more than anything and if you can’t save a few bucks that you normally use for beer and hoes to invest it on your gear and own marketing you don’t deserve to be noticed major labels aren’t gonna sign anybody since it’s not a business to invest thousands on someone not committed enough…
- I think it’s great, it gives talented people a platform to get their work out on which they previously wouldn’t have had, there’s nothing wrong with that, music could be for everyone…

- It’s brilliant! It makes music accesible to everyone rather than only those with the skill to play an instrument or the cash for a bucket of hardware. I also think it’s great in that whilst all you need is a computer, you can build up a stack of hardware too and progress more into that side of things. There’s endless variety with vst’s, synths, drum machines, midi controllers, it just never gets boring..

- This is the 35 per cent of all the production. edit and produce you will need to mix and master too.
- There’s a difference. You can become a producer, just because you can make a decent track, doesn’t mean you’re a good producer…
